District courts are trial courts of general jurisdiction handling major criminal, civil, juvenile, and probate cases, with 27 judges across nine districts who travel as needed, while elected clerks maintain records, manage case files, and oversee juror processes.
Wyoming’s circuit courts handle civil cases under $50,000, small claims under $6,000, misdemeanors, family violence, stalking, eviction cases, and felony preliminary hearings across nine judicial districts and 23 counties.
Wyoming’s treatment courts, now managed by the Judicial Branch as of July 1, 2024, address substance use issues, while a behavioral health diversion pilot launched in January 2024 aims to redirect non-violent, seriously mentally ill individuals into community-based treatment instead of the criminal justice system.
