District Courts

District courts are trial courts of general jurisdiction handling major criminal, civil, juvenile, and probate cases, with 27 judges across nine districts who travel as needed, while elected clerks maintain records, manage case files, and oversee juror processes.

Wyoming’s Chancery Court, established in 2019, resolves complex business, commercial, and trust cases over $50,000, with a full-time judge set to take office on January 1, 2025.

Wyoming’s treatment courts, now managed by the Judicial Branch as of July 1, 2024, address substance use issues, while a behavioral health diversion pilot launched in January 2024 aims to redirect non-violent, seriously mentally ill individuals into community-based treatment instead of the criminal justice system.
