Covering Wyoming's Courts

Courtroom Access

Members of the media have the same right of access to courtroom proceedings as the general public, with few exceptions. Wyoming courts are generally open to the press and public unless a hearing involves a confidential matter under state law, such as juvenile cases.

Recording and Photography

The use of photography, videography, or recording of any kind is strictly prohibited in the Wyoming Supreme Court.

Photography, videography, and recording are generally prohibited in the district, circuit, and chancery courts unless approved by the presiding judge.

Structure

  • Wyoming Supreme Court: The state’s highest court, consisting of five justices.
  • District Courts: General jurisdiction trial courts handling felonies, domestic relations, probate, juvenile, and other matters in each of Wyoming’s counties.
  • Circuit Courts: Limited jurisdiction trial courts handling misdemeanors, small claims, protection orders, preliminary hearings, and other matters.
  • Municipal Courts: Not under the Wyoming Judicial Branch; managed by their respective municipalities.

Judicial Districts

Wyoming is divided into nine judicial districts.

  • First Judicial District: Laramie County
  • Second Judicial District: Albany and Carbon counties
  • Third Judicial District: Lincoln, Sweetwater, and Uinta counties
  • Forth Judicial District: Johnson and Sheridan counties
  • Fifth Judicial District: Big Horn, Hot Springs, Park, and Washakie counties
  • Sixth Judicial District: Campbell, Crook, and Weston counties
  • Seventh Judicial District: Natrona County
  • Eighth Judicial District: Converse, Goshen, Niobrara, and Platte counties
  • Ninth Judicial District: Fremont, Sublette, and Teton counties

Most court records are considered public documents, unless otherwise deemed confidential by state law or court order. To access publicly available case files and court records, members of the media and the general public have the following options:

  • Visit a public access terminal: These terminals are computers located in each court location across Wyoming. These terminals are free for public viewing. Remote access to chancery court filings is available for registered users for a fee.
  • Contact the clerk of court: For a fee, the clerk of court may provide digital or printed copies of case files and court records.

Find a local courthouse or court contact information on the Find a Court page.
